result, part of the hotel will function as the CSHL Asian Meeting
Center, which would provide a platform for academic communications
and meetings. Covering an area of over 80 thousand m2 and a floor

international tastes, one could not help wondering who would have
the proper mind and manner to host such a dignified
hotel.
Frank Guo, the
General Manager of Dushu Lake Hotel, is a genteel middle-aged man.
His two assistants, the Resident Manager Jarold Ong and Director of
Sales and Marketing Daniel Yuan are also cultured gentlemen. Mr.
Guo has been devoted to hospitality industry for over 25 years. He
began his hotel management career in 1983 when he joined Jinling
Hotel Nanjing as a reception executive. Ever since then, he worked
as a senior executive staff in Nanjing Institute of Tourism and
Hospitality, joint-venture hotels, state-owned hotels and
international hotels such as Sheraton and Portman. During this
period, Mr. Guo was dispatched to Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne,
Switzerland and Singapore Hotel and Tourism Education College for
further education and was one of the first Chinese to be granted
the CHA and CHE certificates by American Lodging and Hotel
Association. From 2007 to 2009, he set foot in the real estate
industry as the Deputy General Manager of Shanghai Changrun Realty
Company, being in charge of the pre-planning and positioning for
hotels. In April 2009, he was appointed by Suzhou Venture Group as
the General Manager of Dushu Lake Hotel. His rich experience in
hospitality and warmth to guests has been widely acknowledged in
the industry.

Our interview with Mr. Guo fully reflects his managing principle of
'People orientation'. Emphasizing the importance of an outstanding
managing team, Mr. Guo believes that the hotel should employ the
most suitable staff instead of hiring someone with the highest
market price or following the commonly accepted criteria.
Therefore, he does not limit himself to certain recruitment
patterns but invites talents from all areas. During the interview,
we were deeply impressed by his appreciation of talents. He is
familiar with members of the managing team, who all have work
experience in prestigious corporations. The
Resident Manager came from the Four Seasons Hotel, the Director of
Sales and Marketing from Le Meridien She Shan Shanghai, the Chief
Financial Officer from the Marriott Hotel, the Food
& Beverage Manager from Sheraton, the Front Office
Manager from Shangri-la, the Housekeeping Manager and two Head
Chefs both from internationally famous hotels. In a word, Mr. Guo
leads an elite team, which has rich experiences and acute market
sense and is capable of providing five-star services with a good
and healthy image. Strict with his team, Mr. Guo is satisfied and
confident with his soldiers while all his soldiers express the same
trust. The excellent teamwork is
self-evident.

Mr. Guo's managing
principle also influences his service philosophy. The top managing
team pursues perpetual provision of innovative feelings to
customers, which is mainly reflected in the food and beverage
service. During the preparation for the hotel opening, Mr. Guo and
his team, after heated discussion, decided on the theme of Huaiyang
Cuisine. Besides classical dishes, the hotel develops novel dishes
regularly and offers special dishes with seasonal fresh materials.
In order to grasp the latest trends, the hotel studies and
assimilates the local food culture to create the most satisfying
food and beverage for guests. Just as the Resident Manager Jarold
Ong said, 'Changing and changing' is to satisfy hotel guests'

To shape a unique

garden scenery, classical architecture and modern designs compose a
fascinating picture of history, contemporary and future for the
newly weds. The nature-friendly environment gives expression to the
hotel's features of 'human orientation' and 'individualization',
which renders a more humane flavor to Dushu Lake Hotel.

'Human
orientation 'is not only a service philosophy but also a staff
management philosophy. Facing competition from other major hotels,
Mr. Guo has a profound understanding of advantages of domestic
brands. Local managers, being more familiar with the local market,
customs and consumption habits, are able to provide better
services. Therefore, Mr. Guo tries his best to improve employees'
sense of belonging and contentment through good management and
planning in order to bring advantages of domestic brands into full
play.

As the
southeastern gate of Jiangsu Province and the backyard of Shanghai,
Suzhou always values the market in Shanghai. With 2010 Expo
approaching, Dushu Lake has fully prepared itself for this once a
lifetime opportunity. The Director of Sales and Marketing Mr. Yuan
said that many important clients are based in Shanghai. Hence the
Sales and Marketing Department would schedule one or two weeks
every month to visit clients in Shanghai with an expectation of

marketing and sales teams of Millennium Hongqiao Hotel Shanghai,

Grand Hotels: How will you describe the corporate culture
of Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc? What is the
role of this culture in managing the employees?

Charles Lai: We not only feature coveting facilities, but
also offer outstanding services, an advantage benefited enormously
from our staff training programs. Instead of laying emphasis on the
corporate hierarchy, we treat every employee as a stakeholder. This
culture is established based on the understanding that we are a big
family, where each member performs his or her duty. We are in the
same boat, and only when we cooperate with one another can the boat
move forward in the right direction. Our well-known staff canteen
is as chic as TCC or TDC. Our corporate culture revolves around the
concept that "take care of your employees, and they'll take care of
your customers ".

Grand Hotels: What is your expansion plan for 2009?

Charles Lai: 2009 is a busy year for us, with two new
properties to open in Wuxi (opened at the end of May) and Chengdu
(Opening soon), respectively. While people may wonder why we don't
follow in the footsteps of other hotel companies and postpone or
even cancel projects, the answer is that the economic downtown
shouldn't prevent us from carrying out our strategic investment
plan for Greater China, which was drawn up 5 or 6 years ago. The
plan is focused on several key cities, in the order of Beijing,
Shanghai, Qingdao and Xiamen, which are followed by Wuxi and
Chengdu. It is the time that either you move forward, or you'll
fall behind. The plan must be executed as scheduled so that we can
take a vantage position once the market recovers.

As Singapore's largest international hotel chain, the world's 35th largest hotel group Millennium & Copthorne Hotels and Resorts currently owns, manages and operates in 18 countries worldwide more than 110 hotels, with Millennium, Copthorne and the emperor's door three Hotel Brand. Lizi Hao: We not only proud of hardware facilities, the high quality of service. And thanks to our staff training policy.
